109. life

young and old, birth and death.

the beautiful circle of life continues.

it seems, at times, as if these were our wisest moments, at the beginning and at the end.

but are beginnings and endings just illusions? is not life always in a state of perpetual continuity?

does anything ever really begin? or end?

of course it does, does it?

regardless, it is this ‘during’ in which we live most of our lives.

that space between birth and death is our life.

as the old saying goes,

“yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, today is a gift. that is why they call it the present.”

so take this gift. use it, be it, live it, in gratitude and happiness of receiving it.

do it.

108. summer

sun warming our bodies, our minds, our hearts.

water cooling us down, inside and out.

friends to laugh and play with.

smiles and dancing.

eating and drinking.

digging your toes in the sand.

waving your hands in the wind.

life is beautiful.

107. a struggling relationship

the natural and the artificial.

that which is created naturally has always been the source of inspiration for that which has been crafted artificially by human beings since time immemorial.

our ingeniousness to fabricate machines to mimic the natural world and make our lives “easier” has grown out of control into a plethoric dependency we now can not do without.

our inevitable, unavoidable, addictive dependency on machines, and pillaging the earth to make, build and fuel these, has turned our relationship with the planet into a living paradox.

machines encompass everything from where we live, to the way we get around, from the way we communicate, to the comfort that we have come to expect.

it is an insatiable delusion for control that has caused us to ultimately ravage and destroy this planet, our home.

we now have almost complete control over our environment, time and space.

but at what cost?

we must reconsider our relationship with our planet and one another from one of dominion to one of communion.

106. being human

Filed under: california,san francisco,yerba buena gardens — Tags: , , , , , — roberto @ 11:33 pm

it is important to remind ourselves every now and then that we are human, and, as such, imperfect at best.

why do we have such a hard time accepting this fact?

why can we even encompass such a concept as perfection if that very thing does not even exist?

it is a delusional sickness, this pressure to be perfect.

to overachieve, over-work, over-stress, to over-excel in every endeavour directed at us is modern madness.

i propose a more balanced life.

this planet needs us to slow down.

we should begin to work less, relax more.

105. pride

countless people all over the world celebrated gay pride this weekend.

it is a moment for all people, regardless of gender, race, age or sexual orientation to express their identity.

no one person is identical to anyone else.

in a crowded world full of unique beings, it is essential for all of us to recognize, respect and embrace our differences.

let us see past that which divides us and remember that we are all one.

104. the little things

kneeling at the edge where earth meets water, a child plays with sand and sea.

it is the simplest of things that can bring the greatest pleasures in life.

these times of quiet contemplation unconsciously bring you in communion with nature.

a silent dialogue ensues with the environment, the elements, the senses.

red pollen falls.

it fills the lines in the sidewalk, the cracks where it meets the sewer, its cover also topped with it.

the changing seasons affect everything in this life.

from the flowering of a tree to our mood. from the clothes we wear to the decisions we make.

at least its somewhat predictable and consistent, you can see it coming, you have time to prepare.

unexpected change, however, can kill you.

a single word can take a person’s life.

brace yourself to expect the unexpected.

learn to cherish change, whether you asked for it or not, because that is the only constant in life.

when someone faces you, you are in control of your reaction.

you can growl and gnash your teeth, or you can smile and wag your tail.

remember we are all part of one life.

each one of us has an impact, whether we want to make one or not.

knowing this, focus your every act on it being as positive and helpful to all as is possible.

we all play a part in this theater we are thrust upon.

own your part.

101. love chain

in the courtyard garden of a temple outside of the city, prayers are tied into magnolia trees and sacred chains.

red ribbons with golden writing are ceremoniously tied with a breath and a blessing.

locks of love clasp to the chain, in hopes that their loves will be bound, as unbreakable and holy as these.

incense and bells ring and fill the air.

this is a place where dreams set sail, where wishes begin to construct themselves around us.

100. step by step

when you face a set of stairs head on, all you see is a massive wall.

but if you have the courage to approach it, you quickly notice it is something else entirely.

what you thought was an impenetrable wall is actually a series of small steps.

it is all a matter of perspective.

that is what life is.
